Due to popular demand I'm continuing this series - the Working Momma Diaries - to share some of the things I've learned while balancing work and being a momma.
For those that don't know me well, I travel for work. I used to travel every week and took a role for the current year where I travel about 1-2 times a month instead. My husband also travels for work 100% of the week. Needless to say, we have spent the past few months figuring out a new routine and balancing crazy travel, airplanes, nap times, family time, bedtime, and trying to find time for friends and romance. I looked around and realized a lot of my momma friends work and figured I'd share some of the best tips I've learned from them and my time so far.
This is my fourth round of Whole30 and while it gets easier every time, because I know my triggers and have a list of my favorite recipes, the hardest thing is how inconvenient it is. We really live in a culture where take out, drive thrus or picking something up on the way to wherever it is we are going. My weakness is driving through the Starbucks line or walking into Jo's coffee shop in Austin on my way into the office and grabbing a breakfast sandwich or taco when I wasn't able to make breakfast in the morning. But it's REALLY hard to find something on the go when you're doing Whole30.
So I made a list of some of my favorite places and tips when you're out and about in Austin to make your work week juggle a bit easier during the next half of our 30 days!
Food Out Ideas
-Try a Whole30 place: my favorite is Snap Kitchen because they have lots of Whole30 options and even do Whole30 meal services where they deliver you 3, 5 or 7 days of meals! My second favorite is PICNIK. The trailer in South Austin has very few true Whole30 options, but the Brick and Mortar one up north has a lot!
- Salads: my go-to anywhere is to get the salad, with grilled meat and avocado. Just watch to make sure the meat is cooked in olive oil or canola oil. Almost every restaurant will be able to tailor a salad like this! Some of my favorites with specific eat-to-make salad bars where you can make your own salads in Austin are Mad Greens, Flower Child and Vinaigrette
- Entres: try grilled meats, with steamed veggies and sweet potatoes; just ask they hold the butter. You can try salmon, steak, or so many more things like scallops or mussels or chicken!
-Snacks: RX Coconut chocolate, blueberry or mixed berry flavored bars and epic bars (my favorite are the chicken and elk ones!) are great when you are in a bind and sometimes are my go-to when I know I'm going somewhere where I will be tempted. They are just filling enough to hold me over
-Happy Hours: Honestly, I find these the hardest thing to attend when I'm on Whole30. I am always wanting the bar food or just to sit back and relax after a long week with my girlfriends. My go-to drinks to order are ones that are super filling and kept me feeling in the festive spirit: hot water with lemon or an ice tea are my first options, depending on the temperature. Another option is a seltzer or sparkling water. You can ask for the bartender to put some fruit in it for a fun twist, too. I know neither of those are as exciting as a cocktail or glass of wine, but remember its only 30 days and you can do this!
